What are inbound number types?


An inbound number, also known as a virtual number or toll free number, are phone numbers used to forward a call from a caller to a termination point (your phone).  Inbound numbers have no infrastructure or physical cabling requirements. They are virtual and piggy-back on existing landlines and mobile networks around Australia.

There are three types of inbound numbers in Australia,:

  • 1800 Numbers – 1800 followed with a 6 digit number, e.g. 1800 555 888
  • 1300 Numbers – 1300 followed with a 6 digit number, e.g. 1300 555 888
  • 13 Numbers – have 13 followed by a 4 digit number p, e.g. 13 45 56

We point your chosen inbound number to your landline or mobile, so there’s no down time if you are transferring your current 1300 numbers.

How does a 1300 number work?


Inbound numbers can be used anywhere in Australia, regardless of geography. Calls to these numbers are directed to a ‘Standard Fixed Line Number’, for example 02 9898 5656, or a Mobile Service Number (MSN), for example 0448 001 004. The number where calls are sent and answered are called the Answer Points.

When a call is made to a 1800, 1300 or 13 number, the call enters the network and finds the relevant routing information for that inbound number and the call proceeds to its destination. This all happens in milliseconds, so the person dialing doesn’t experience any delay.

It is important to understand that you can’t make outgoing calls from an inbound 1300 number, as the number does not have a physical location.
